To help you stay warm and save money

Get your heating system as efficient as you can.
To improve efficiency, inspect, clean, and maintain your heating system.Periodic maintenance such as cleaning and replacing filters can save up to 10% of your heating cost.

Instead of turning up the heat, dress in layers of clothing to increase comfort level.
For example, put on a sweater.  A light long-sleeved sweater equals almost 2º in added warmth, while a heavy, long-sleeved sweater adds about 4º.    

Take advantage of free heat from the sun.
Open curtains and drapes on the sunny side of your home during the day.  But be sure to close the curtains and drapes when the sun sets.

To stay warm at night
put extra blankets on your bed, and use warmer fabrics such as flannel sheets.

Close off any unused rooms, and partially close the heat vents in those rooms.

Don't block heat vents, registers or heating units with furniture or drapes.

At night, turn thermostat down 10º F from its normal setting.
Also turn it down 10º F when you're leaving for 4 hours or more.  For every degree you lower the thermostat, you'll   save between 1 and 3% of your heating bill.

When washing clothes, use cold water and wash full loads only.
Turn your water heater down to120º F.  Install low-flow restrictors on showerheads and faucets.  Take short showers instead of baths.

Clean your refrigerator coils on a regular basis.
Select "Power Miser" for refrigerator setting and temperature.  Set freezer temperature at 0-5º F.

Avoid use of kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans during the winter.
